You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.
1 Peter 1:8 NLT
This verse talks about a specific kind of joy that is “inexpressible” and “glorious” as Peter writes to the believers about what to hope for. He explains to the believers that even though some of them may have experienced trials, this only refines and reveals their faith, which Peter further explains that it results in “praise, glory and honor” in the days to come when Jesus is revealed. After explaining to the believers what to hope for and look forward to, Peter continues by explaining that the believers are filled with an “inexpressible” and “glorious” joy even though they cannot see Jesus or even the way He is working. Lastly, Peter explains the purpose of the joy, the result of their faith, which is salvation. This verse provides a form of relief for the various trials these believers had been enduring as Peter encourages them to remain joyful throughout them, even if they cannot clearly see a way out. Today, we can look at this verse and remember through the trials in our own lives that even if we cannot see God’s plan or a clear way out, there is still joy through the result of our faith in Him.
